Protecting The Home Front
Don’t Forget Your Spouse—FSGLI Conversion Rights
Military spouses are the backbone of the “Home Front,” yet many families don’t realize that a spouse’s life insurance is often tied directly to the member’s service status. When that service ends, Family SGLI (FSGLI) ends—but the right to convert remains.
The $100,000 Opportunity
Spouses covered under FSGLI have the independent right to convert up to $100,000 into a permanent commercial policy. Like the service member, the spouse is guaranteed acceptance without a medical exam if they apply within 120 days of a qualifying event
What Counts as a “Qualifying Event”?
The 120-day clock for a spouse starts on the date of:
The service member’s separation from the military.
The dissolution of the marriage (divorce).
The death of the service member.
The service member electing in writing to terminate FSGLI or SGLI coverage.
The 121-Day Start Date
To ensure continuous protection, the spouse’s new civilian policy becomes effective on the 121st day after the FSGLI coverage terminates. This seamless transition means your family is never without a safety net during a major life change.
